Living In Australia

You have made the good choice! Reading this article will surely be a benefit to you, hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed writing it for you.

Australian society, founded on principles of egalitarianism and "mateship," is where the original European settlers hoped to create their utopia in Oz and improve upon Old World governance. While Australian politics are imperfect, many immigrants continue to flock to the "land down under" to work for themselves, enjoy the beach and live with more purchasing power. According to GoMatilda.com, if you were to earn $50,000 USD in America, then you would need to earn $37,879 AUD in Australia to maintain the same standard of living.

If you're an American who has moved to Australia, then you likely experienced a period of culture shock. At first, you may have found yourself confused, frustrated or agitated by certain cultural differences that seemed minute before you became embedded in Australian society. You've probably heard the rumor that Americans aren't exactly "loved" around the world, courtesy of George W. Bush. This isn't necessarily true in Oz, as many Australians are ambivalent about Americans. Some Americans reported that they felt they didn't belong or couldn't advance in jobs because of their "Yankee" accents, although 75% of Americans said their migration was a positive experience, without any discrimination.

Unlike the rugged individualism you're used to, Australians value teamwork, or "mateship," as they call it. It's customary to sit up front with taxi drivers and tipping isn't necessary. In some cases, it's even seen as insulting! Australians are quick to use first names but slow to invite people over. However, once invited, it's customary to bring wine, chocolates or flowers with you. While respect is given in Australia, the people love bantering and exerting a difference of opinion.

Avoid personal questions or discussing prices with Aussies and forgive them for their seemingly blunt way of speaking. The "thumbs up"/hitchhiking sign is offensive down under, gifts are not given in a business context (as they're seen as cheap bribes) and men winking at women is also offensive. In business, Australians value modesty, presentation of facts (sans details), adherence to the chain of command and keeping business and pleasure separate. If you're invited to the pub, then don't bring up business matters and don't miss your turn to shout for a round.

Without a long history of immigration, Australia wouldn't be what it is today. Europeans brought their pioneering spirit as they searched for gold in the 1800s, the 1900s brought an influx of Asian immigrants and the new millennium is poised to be a period of skilled worker migration. In Australia, you will find one of the most multicultural workforces in the world. English is the primary language, yet over 200 languages are spoken and 25% of the population was born outside the country, when compared to the 10% foreign-born population in the US or 17% in Canada.

Today's Tip On Australia

The aboriginals of the Daruk, Eora and Guringai tribes began in Sydney Australia as long as 40,000 years ago have left their mark on this popular Australian city; the name of a city suburb, petroglyphs and rock carvings, paintings or seafood shell piles all show evidence of early civilizations. Europeans sailed over in 1788, arriving with England's First Fleet, which was a ship full of prisoners. Originally designated as a penal colony, Australia's fortune changed when gold was discovered. It attracted settlers from all around the world who arrived, settled and set up an official government.
